What happens if I ignore a cavity?

Ignoring a cavity can lead to deeper decay, affecting the tooth's inner layers (dentin and pulp). Eventually, this can cause severe pain, infection, abscess formation, and even tooth loss. In advanced cases, bacteria from the infected tooth can spread to other parts of the body. Treating cavities early with a simple filling is much easier — and less expensive — than waiting until a root canal or extraction is necessary.
